OIL-ELECTRIC SYSTEM

REVOLUTION IN TRANSPORT

LATEST DEVELOPMENT

United Tress Association —By Electric Tele- ( sraph—Copyright. XOXDON, 22nd November.

The "Daily Mail" says that in order to inspect oil-electric locomotives capable of drawing trains with 900 passengers at 70 miles an hour, the President of the Board of Trade, Mr. \V. Eunciman, visited Armstrong-Whitworth's works at Newcastle, and will report on the prospects to the Prime Mr. Kamsay Mac Donald.

It is claimed that the installation of the engines, which are also applicable to manufacturing, will revolutionise travel and save the railway companies £22,000,000 'a year.

The locomotives, four of which have been ordered for the Buenos Aires railways, resemble huge aluminium boxes. The driver behind plate-glass windows easily controls 1700 horse-power, pressing a self-starter and pulling a lever. The engines can be utilised day and night continuously. One was tested for six months. It ran 25,000 miles, and was worked 17 hours a day.
