MONEY AND RELIGION
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —The Press Association message published in your issue of 21st instant, .giving an extract from the sermon preached by Bishop Cherrington at Hamilton on Sunday last, whieh_-embodies the statement that pounds, shillings, " and pence figure too much in our religion to-day, and that there should be no paid clergy is interesting.. The worthy bishop is apparently not aware that one at least of the churches has, from its inception, adopted the very suggestions now made by him. I refer to the Liberal Catholic Church, which derives its orders from the Old Catholic Church of Holland. In that church no member of the episcopate or of the clergy receives any payment whatever, ror his services, and, in addition, no fees of any kind are accepted in connection with the rites of the church such' as baptisms, marriages, or funeral services. No: man is consecrated as bishop except with the consent of the clergy and lay members of the various congregations in the diocese over which" he is to r.ule, nor is any man ordained to the diaconat'e or priesthood until the members of the congregation to which he is to minister have expressed their approval. The suggestions made by Bishop Cherrington, which may have appeared startling to many members of his nock, are therefore not new, but have beenm operation in one branch of the Church Catholic for many years part.—l am, etc., .-:, LIBERAL CATHOLIC. :
