OBITUARY

DR. WALTER FELL

'The death occurred yesterday at Matin a Bay, where he resided, of Dr. Walter Felly who was 77 years of age. Tie late Dr. Fell was at one time a well-known figure in Wellington, his energies being devoted, in addition to his medical work, to yachting and art. ,'The late Dr. Fell was-born in Nelson in: 1855, hi 3 father being the late Mr. Alfred Fell. From the age of four onwards he resided in the south of France with his parents, and he was subsequently, educated at Rugby and Oxford' University. His medical studies were carried out at St. Thomas's Hospital, London, where he rose to be house surgeon and house physician. His M.A. and M.D. degrees were obtained at Oxford, and ho • also qualified M.B.C.S. (Eng.) and L.R.C.P.-(London). In 1884 he returned to New Zealand, and later joined Dr. W. E. Collins in practice in "Wellington. He retired from practice about twenty-five years agoj hut upon the outbreak of the war returned to England and obtained a commission in the 8.A.M.C., serving in England and the Mediterranean, with the final rank of major. In: sport, the late Dr. Fell took most interesfc.ia rowing whilst at Oxford, and for. three years rowed in his College boat at the head of the river. . He was an- enthusiastic-, yachtsman, and held the highest offices in the Port Nicholson Yacht Olub and in the Star Boating- Club,-his five-ton boat, the Mahia, being well known in these waters. His interest in art, too, was well known, and from 1900 to 1909 he was president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. ■ • . . ■ .

In 1886 Dr. JE'ell married the third daughter of the late Mr. Justice Richmond. He is survived by his wife and two sons r Mr. Christopher Fell, of "Whangarei, Lieutenant-Commander "W. Fell, of the Royal Navy, and three daughters, Mrs. F. A. Wilson, Mrs. G. y. Bogle, and Miss A. Fell.

MR. EMIL HALSTED

DUNEDIN, This Day.

The death occurred yesterday of Mr. Emil Isaac Halsted, managing director of Hallenstein Brothers, and president of the Public Art Gallery Society. Mr. Halsted was born 'in Melbourne in 1867 and came to Dunedin. as a young man.
