GIRL STOWAWAY

FINED £10

TO GO BACK TO AUSTRALIA

(By Telegraph.—Press Association). AUCKLAND', 22nd November.

Marion Bell, the 19-year-old girl who was handed over to the police as a stowaway when the liner Mariposa arrived to-day and who pleaded that she wanted to go to America, was later charged before Mr. MeKean in the Police Court with having stowed away. She pleaded guilty.

Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that the shipping company had consented to take her back to Australia by the Monterey, sailing on sth December. The accused, who commenced crying hysterically, said she was acquainted with a member of the crew of the Mariposa, who had no money, but if she was allowed to continue the voyage the fare would be paid. Mr. Kelly: She would have even less chance of getting into America than into New Zealand.

The accused (to the Mariposa's purser, who was in Court): Oh, purser, can you not take me back to the- Mariposa? I do not want to go to prison. You will get- your money all right. Pleas© go and see the captain. The Magistrate: We have, quite a number of male stowaways, but this is the first time I have had a female stowaway before me. The only thing I can do is to order her to be detained in custody until arrangements can be made for her to be taken back to Australia. '

"I am sorry for you, but it is all I can do," said Mr. MeKean to the accused, in. fining her £.10, in default twenty-one days' imprisonment.
