ROAD AND RAIL
THE NELSON DISTRICT
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 22na November.
1 The proposed new transport regulations' were discussed at an expcutivft meeting of the Kelson Provincial Progress League, It was decided to request the Transport Board to postpone the date for the reception of protests to 31st December, also that a public meetings to -which the Maryborough-, Murchison, and Motueka Progress Leagues will be invited, be called to discuss the regulations as they affect the northern, part of the South Island.
Mr. L. Baigent stated that the proposed regulations wpuld affect Nelson and Marlborough vitally. Both districts were badly served with railways, and most of the traffic was carried by motors. ,In these districts the rail did not run along the route of: main roads, and he pointed out that anything which affected road transport in areas where there were no railways ivould be detrimental to the district.
The proposed discontinuance of the Railway Department's through freight service to Murchison was also discussed, and it was resolved to draw the Bailway Board's attention to the apparent differentiation of rail charges, which tended to drive the transport of goods to the Inangahua-Lyttelton line: :and a"way from the Nelson' section. ■':'.') i
