THE LEVIN MEETING
HORSES FROM TRENTHAM
SEVERAL'r\VI.TH CHANCES
-~ Tr,entham-trajned horses had even bet- - ter than their-usual innings at the Carterton Racing Club's Annual Meeting on 1 Saturday; for they were successful in five of the eight events and gained nine other _ placings. Tlie opposition from other, centres, however, was very moderate-in-'' deed, and it is hardly likely that the same measure of success will come their way at Levin next Saturday,- where other centres will be much more strongly represented. . ... ...,, . PRINCIPAL HANDICAP. ( Gay Court, Pahu, and Joie de Val will again be Trentham's hand in the main event, the Levin Handicap, and it is quite even odd* that.one of these horses will be triumphant. ' : Gay Court was probably fairly and squarely beaten in the Wairarapa County Cup, but in being- awarded the race after an inquiry he . has-.had, to suffer a rehandicap for Levin. He lias been sent up 71b to 7.10, a weight that in itself should not trouble him' very much more than, what he originally had, because he has done, most of his racing at much' higher weights and he is now used to carrying them. Possibly the additional impost will be*a factor in his favour, as it should enable him to be more easily controlled over the early stages. of the contest. The Carterton race should have been of more benefit to him than to either Pahu or Joje de Val, and ho is likely to beat this pair again, for he will.be meeting them at only 41b and 51b 'worse terms respectively. He will not have the ser. vices of A. H. Eastwood, who will have to be on hand at Eiccarton, but S. Wilson, who has now been engaged for bun, should prove a good substitute. Two recent winner^ in the field in Chopin and Arajean are. likely to. trouble Gay Court more than his Trentham rivals, Chopin went quite a good race in the New •■ Zealand Cup, indicating: that he would make an early, return, to winning .form, and, immediately sent back to Hawkes Bay, he was successful the following Saturday in winning' the ' Spring Handicap at Hastings. He scored narrowly, but he did it the right way from the back in the last furlong. Once he strikes form he usually holds it for some time, and he may prove one of the hardest horses to beat t>n Saturday., Arajean was a winner over a mile at Waipawa, and she has been successful up to a mile and a quarter previously, but she is not always too reliable a medium of investment, as in the past she has needed races run to suit her. THE OPEN.SPRINT. In the -McDonald Memorial Handicap, tie, day's open sprint, the Carterton winner, Lyrical, is not' engaged, but three other Trentham horses in Eminent, Solitairp IJ, and Sir .Pombal are in the field. Eminent was the winner of the Maunga- . raki Handicap, seven furlongs, at Carterton, and although he has now gone up Sib to 7.11 at Levin for the' success he should not be seriously inconvenienced by such weight. He is: improving,, and he has on other. occasions made, better showinss in open company than among the hacks, because there is not such a lot of him and' he begins to feel the weight when it climbs toward the nine stones.-.; Solitaire II won two hack events at Carterton, and-has incurred 71b rebandicap, lifting her to 7.7 at Levin. If she. reproduced -bsr; last; : Saturday's" form she would have a definite chance at tie weight/ but with a difference in starters-she may hot leave the-barrier with her recent ■ alacrity.; She is a mare who becomes unsettled very quickly when there is any ■ delay with consequent jostling about at the start, but last Saturday Mr. Connop's , walk-up dispatches avoided all such unsettling influences, and played into the hands of unduly highly-strung horses such as she is. .._■■■■.-■•• , Sir Pombal hardly ran up to expectation on Saturday, and he will need to show definite improvement to win at -Levin. Equitaht, an Awapuni candidate, ■ appeared to have had,every- chance,.but it is possible that her-rider" lost on her through over-confidence,'and she'is capable of:proving harder/to teat, next Saturday. Wasteland looks the best prospect among the others. '. - IN OTHER EVENTS. - .Trentham stables, have good representation in all the other six events, but they ..will- encounter very much more solid opposition in most of them than confronted them at Carterton. - ■ ; : In the Maiden Race, which; differing from the Carterton novice event, is for pure maidens only at time of starting, .the, Trenthara candidates should be capable of holding their, own. Cape of Good Hope, Maypay; '; and Milnrow. look the best of them,-judged through recent running, and the most likely of-their opponents may be Bee Acre, Beaconsfield," /King Thomond, and Acrelict—not in all a very redoubtable lot on what has been seen of them to date. .. ■ The three representatives in the Manakau Hack Hurdles can hardly b8 relied on to do much. Arabs is troubled with nasal bleeding, and although he is a good jumper .in private may not. see the distance out because of his affliction. Bright Song appears a hopeless proposition, and Taura Lad- has not raced for two years. Araios and Taura Lad will be making their debut as hurdlers. Warzone and Manifesto are two who should beat the' Trentham trio easily. Late Jest promises to do best from these parts in the Weraroa Hack Handicap. He ran two much improved races into the places at Carterton.' In the past he has not been too reliable, but with only the minimum .he must be respected here. Clangor, .and Gold. Horn are another pair who may make prominent show-, ings, and Chile is a well-bred newcomer at the tracks, -'who/has "galloped quite satisfactorily in '"fiis -first trials. The. ■toughest of the outside' section looks to be Chief Savage. ■-''■:•: TOUGH OPPOSITION. Solitaire II and Sir Pombal have an engagement in the Mako MakpHack Handicap as well as in the open sprint, and if produced in the hack event they are likely to race/well.. Purse and Aroma are handily weighted among the remainder, but the' latter does not look a reliable among big fields yet. Outside stables, however, look to hold a..better hand in this race, for their representatives include Aiguille, "Broken Rule, Wasteland, • Dick Whittington, and Miss Cavendish. . ■".' Gay Court, Joie de Val, (Lyrical,' Capetown, and Flower comprise a useful quintet in the Lake Hack Handicap, but the . first two o! them have another engagement that may be more attractive. Lyrical and Flower-are, likely, to start, and should.race prominently. Other, centres are strongly'engaged, with Saltpot, Fondle, Sanguine King, and Kahunoke especially. Kahunoke will-be-hard to beat again with 7.12, the highest weight to which Mr. Coyle was justified in raising him from his ■ original impost. Saltpot also appears rather well in at 8.6, especially when compared with Capetown's S.I 1. Hokio Haek'Handicap finds Solitairell with still another engagement, and her new weight, 9.2, would not stop her if she could be relied on to get away as at Carterton. Maypay, who races in the same-colours, is also engaged. Late Jest is the only one of the other Trentham candidates who looks at all likely. It is a race that will probably.be.won by a horse from other parts.- • • ; -.. Trentham .stables, cannot,,be expected to have the Bame'EucceES^aß./a-t-.-Carterton, but some races.at least^shonjd come their way. They hold as .good .prospects as j horses from-other parts in the open handicaps, and their candidates also read well in some of the hack events and in the maiden event. Most of the centre's horses are well seasoned with the benefit of recent racing, and this should stand to them on Saturday.
