The weather was fine and cool and the wicket in splendid condition yesterday for the resumption of the cricket match, England v. an Australian team: England continued the first innings, which closed for 282 runs. When stunipa were drawn Australia had nine wickets down for 216. The attendance was 53,000 and i he gate receipts £3600. Eesuming England's innings, Allen opened brightly. He hit three 4's off Ironmonger's second over and added 20 in ten minutes. Duckworth was content to hang on and batted for an extra twenty-five minutes without scoring. Allen played splendidly in the later stages. He batted for 110 minutes and hit seven boundaries. Nash showed better pace. . -•■-.■
Australia commenced the first innings at 1 o'clock, runs coming slowly. Soon after lnnch Woodf nil received a nasty blow ( on the chest from Larwood, who was making the ball fly.' *• Woodfull was .in for seventy-two minutes.
Bradman mado remarkably clever pulls off Bowes's bumpers. ' Bradman was too reckless at times, both in stealing runs, in which he had several narrow escapes, and pulling off balls. He lost Ms wicket in attempting such a hit. He batted for forty-six minutes and hit four boundaries.
O'Brien was stolid but neat. He batted for 158 minutes and hit one 4.
Three wickets fell for 13i. Bowes was then bowling very accurately and Larwood was maintaining a good pace. _ Lee gave a bright display for thirtysix minutes, in which he hit. two 4's, but the' bowlers were definitely on top throughout.- ,
