the United Kingdom, and tables provided by H.M. Trade Commissioner in his report constitute an endeavour to indicate, on the basis of percentage, the share held in 1931 by the United Kingdom of the import trade in those classes of goods in which she may be regarded as able to compete They show for each class the total imports and the share held by the United Kingdom; the total imports of those items in which the United Kingdom lias under 1 per cent, of the trade, and tho' total imports of the remaining items with the United Kingdom share' of those items.
"It will be seen that, of the total imports,-49.17' per cent, came from the United Kingdom, as compared with 47.27 per cent, in 1930. The elimination of the under 1 per cent, items, i.e., the non-competitive trade, shows that of> the competitive trade in 1931 the United Kingdom held 63.09 per cent., the corresponding figures for 1929 and 1930 being-56.2 per cent, and 59.2 per cent., so that there has been a steady and progressive increase in the share of the competitive import trade of New Zealand held by the United Kingdom."
