AGREEMENT REACHED
NEW BASIC RATE OF PAY
A brief announcement was made yesterday on behalf of both the ers of waterside labour and the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Federation to the effect that an agreement had been arrived at between the employers and the Federation. Tho new rates of pay will come into; operation onr 24th; and are retrospective to 19th August. .The new basic rate of pay is 2s an hour, and there are-extra rates for special cargoes. Neither side was willing -to amplify or comment on the agreement to-day. A brief survey of the negotiations is as follows:-—Failing to reach agreement in Conciliation Council, after a lapse of 30 days the award expired on the night of 18th August last. On 19th August the employers put into force the pro-' posals they had made in Conciliation Council. The employees approached the employers on 22nd August and agreed to work at the Is lid rate, but under the old conditions pending further consideration of an agreement, and on tho understanding that whatever was eventually agreed upon should be retrospec-tively-paid as to 19th August. An agreement has now been reached on tho lines set .out above. . ' ,
