': The racing, was.keenly^ contested in the minor events at Carterton '■■ on Saturday, and there were .several close fiijighes. The pubhc_wera- well on the mark and .wellfancied candidates'had an; excellent innings. A; gpoi. performance was' the double, success 'of-the Trentham hack Solitaire 11. ■'•••'.•' "■ ,-■"•"..: RiEDTQP ON .MERITS. v The Australian-bred three-year-old ■Redfern colt, -Eedtop,.who 'is owned and trained by, Mr. Q. Physick, of ,Jl«sterton, confirmed his recent promise, bx winning the Novice Stakes narrowly but very decisively on the merits. "'He lost a forward position on the fence early,.and had i fallen in behind Meritor, .Cape, of. r Good Hope, and Late Jest .as the. field came into the straight, but then lie finished with a powerful. run . alohg the outside and finally wore down Cape of Good Hope to score by a head. Ho did riot appear to D« too well handled in the'middle stages, 'but he won, "and that is what counts most. : Cape of Good Hope,: one iof ,the three legs of the. Kemball bracket, was second behind. Meritor'most of the way,-, and took - charge . when the. latter,.. compounded in the straight.. He looked the winner with .fifty.yards to go", but, he was .just not quite up to withstanding Hedtop'.''"Whereas the latter was the favourite, his bracket
was tenth favourite. ; at nearly as big a price for second. The-other members of the bracket were Aviatrix and Vivette.-
Late Jest, third half a length. back, ; was always, one of the leaders, but ho w ; as running on the outside and this left him without' the necessary reserve over the clpsipg. stages. It : was one of his best races for some time: "
Milnrow finished a good fourth after being badly placed till the straight was leached. Rhca, Clangor, Rene Belle, and Fusion were nearest of' the 6thers at the end. Ehea was always well up and is worth-remembering for the holidays. Clangor was running on, but his bracketed mate, Meritor, petered out. This pair were, by coincidence, equal joint favourites with the winner. Eene Belle and Mayipay were never in likely positions. Vivette was left at the start. ,; ricGISBORNE SUCCESS. "The';;Gisborne visitor, Kahunbke, looked thrown into the Carringtonr Highweight Hanidieap, and :theT public were not slow to seize the; opportunity^.the race presented fpr .making easy, money. .His backers .were a little';worried when Golden Horn and Awe ./cleared - out early and had an' eight.sor- ten lengths': lead, over Him with half:;;the .journey ./covered;-'.but then he. beganfto close the "gap, and in the end he; won going away;.by a good : i two lengths.'.'- His :. correct' weight. was ■ probably': nearly-a stone more, than lie had/ and.-even.tliat lnigljt not 'have stopped; him/whining.' . ."-. He liad' Goldgn Horn beaten three furlongs from home, and still had a good lead: over Kahunoke at the straight entrance, but was finally no match for the winner in the run homo. It did not look the wisest tactics racing him to a standstill in the way he was. Kalmuck came from the back for third money two lengths away. Golden Horn was fourth three.Jengthsvfurthcr: back.-..
