HUTT VALLEY TOURNEY
Under the new scheme governing the Public Schools' Lawn Tennis "' Tourney, the Hutt Valley group of schools began its tournament on Saturday. Two hundred boys :an'd girls participated in a series'bf'contests wnicK will be continued next Saturday..; The^winners, of the vart o.us events will"qualify to: meet the' winners in., the- other; groups of city schools in a' tournament" to /be held at Miramar grounds early nest month. One additional representative will be nominated in each event.
Interest in "the Hutt Valley event is perhaps greater than that in other zones because at the last meeting this group of schools showed itself to be the strongest in Wellington. Thirteen of-the twentyfour finalists., in the tournament of last December came from Hutt schools, and three championships are at present held there. O. Bold, the runner-up in the boys' senior singles last year, D. Wiggins, the- boys' junior. singles and doubles champion, and- E. • Pope, the boys' junior doubles title-holder are competing again this year.
On Saturday eleven courts were used and good progress was made. Play was not of the same standard as will be seen in the later rounds, but there were some keen matches. ■ .'•
