For the continuation of the local cricket competitions the weather on' Saturday afternoon was again unkind. For a greater part of the afternoon it was fine, but there was: always a wind of considerable velocity, and with it some light rain late -in the afternoon. Bowlers generally were handicapped," particularly wlien the ball became greasy. A good showing generally was made -with the bat, Old Boys appearing to 'the best advantage as a team in running up 306 runs against Petone, whose bowling was b66 so effective as in previous matches. Colts were "again conspicuous among the Old Boys' batsmen, dv Chateau, R. H. Lamason, and Sadler all shaping well.. This, match was played on the Basin Reserve, as; also was that between Midland arid Institute, in which. W. Dustin demonstrated his powers as a batsman, by making. 129 runs. Dustin has been due for a-big score, and he made it on Saturday like a.tra'desmaii, finally adding a. flourish in. laurielviug out on a speeding ■up process. "The'-bowlers-in this match also had a hard task, and it was" only a run of success by Fortune during four overs Well on in the afternoon that an improved outlook was brought' about. University; made a, poor showing against Kilbirnie.' Paeey and Blandford gave- the side a. splendid start, but after two wickets had. fallen the side collapsed. Kilbirnie did /Hot., fare well in replay, five wickets being lost at comparatively small cost. Wellington, did not fare too well against Hutt, i and' had. to thank Foley again for another" good performance, this time in batting throughout the inuings. Hutt made an excellent start in reply, taking advantage of the improved conditions for the batsmen.
