EVANS BAY HANDICAPS

SOME HEAVY WEATHER

Heavy weather handicaps . ;ve allotted in the Evans Bay Yacht- and Motor-boat Club's keel yacht races on Saturday aftcruoon. The strong, squally northerly wind and rough sea resulted in the postponement of the centreboard events until yesterday, and even the bigger craft, reefed well down, made hard work of the beat up the bay. The co.urse for both first and second-class heelers was from the clubhouse to the Coromandcl .buoy, to the Somes Rock buoy,, and back to the clubhouse. The races were started together at 3 o'clock.

In the first-class handicap the first boat home was the Wairere II; which finished at -Shr 55min 30see p.m., but' which was displaced by the Viola on time allowance. The Atalanta was the only other boat to finish. The Galatea, although giving away iip to llmin, scored another decisive win in the second-class race from scratch. She finished at shr smin p.m., over llmin ahead of the Nanette, which was the next boat home. Her performance was most Creditable, particularly as she -was 6min late in • starting. The following are the handicaps, finishing" and corrected times, and/ placiugs:— FIRST CLASS-RACE. Galatea- (scr), shr smin 1 Annetta (llmin), Shr 24min 34sec, shr 13min 34sec 2 Nanette (scr), ohr 16min 20sec 3 Also started:, Rawene (9min), shr 45min 44sec, shr 36mln 44sec; Clutha (9mln) did not finish. At the start of the centrcboarders' races yesterday morning the wind was a light southerly, but it changed to a-fresh north-westerly before, the boats finished. Tha Betty (scratch) had an easy win in the Rona-Jellicoe rnce, crossing the finishing lino at 12hr-35min 31sec P;jn., 4min-39sec ahead of the next.boat, the Clyde. The Scandal scored well in the flrstclass centreboarders". handicap," and the Colleen and Damflno provided an exciting finish in the race for 13ft'and under class, boat, ■ the latter crossing: the line half n second to the good but going down to third place on corrected time.
