COLLEGE SPORT

MPEVEDY SHIELD

MORE RECORDS BROKEN

CONCLUDING RESULTS

In one of the finest contests for several years Hutt Valley High School and Wellington College tied for the McEvedy Shield in the annual inter-collegiate sports held at Athletic Park on Saturday. This is the second time only on which Wellington College has not been successful in carrying. off the shield by a good margin, and in the eleven years in which the trophy has been competed for it has been won nine timea by the college. The result -was in doubt up to the last event, the half-mile senior relay race, Wellington College then being'in "the lead.: Hutt Valley, however, fielded :-. strong team for the race, and in one of ■ the most stirring-events of the day won by one and V half yards from Wellington College. I;:"-:. . \ .;.. /. ■. . '■""' 'SHIELD POINTS. In the three grade 3 into which the competition was divided—senior,. intermediate; and-junior—Wellington College1 and .the ■ Hutt-Valley High School: scored' 36%' points each, Wairarapa 21% points, St. Patrick's '■= College, Wellington, 21 points, Technical College 13^ points, Kongotai 12% points, St. Patrick's College, Silverstream, 4% points, '• Scots College 4 points, and Wellesley nil. The shield was presented by the Rev. Father Dowling to A. F. James and C. M. Ongley, respective, captains of the Hutt Valley and Wellington "Colleges. Father • Bowling spoke of.the very high standard of secondary school athletics, and expressed the hope that the boys who had competed co meritoriously"would not lose contact with they sport. ;vThe Combined ' Old' Boys' Athletic Club; had'recently been formed, and _he said that there existed an opportunity for theib'oys to keep the friendships they had made that day by joining the club and putting it on a sound, footing.': •—^": --•-■-—.--■■ • Owing'to the threatening weather- the attendance did" not total more than a thousand; but the day's sport certainly warranted greater interest. In fourteen cases previous records were bettered by competitors, and in one case a.record was equalled.. .Considering the nature of the day and the gusty Weather, this may be taken as a fair indication of the stand-, ard of the athletics. It is improbable, however, that some of the new figures established will be accepted as records. A FINE THROW. , One notable event in the programme was the discus throw, in which E. R. McClune, of Wellington College, made a cast of 131 ft lin, breaking the previous record and his own record-breaking throw of the morning. In the afternoon the 220 yds junior race, the 440 yds junior, the senior high jump, and the 440 yds junior relay produced new records, but these are subject to confirmation.

In the main, it wag the team-work which, was most attractive, though there were several notable exceptions, including that of M. Watt, a young Wellington College boy, . and brother to J. M. Watt, who competed with considerable distinction in previous years. Watt is a fine all-round athlete from whom much may be expected. Other boys who made good impressions were James (Hutt), MacPhereon and Warham (Wairai-apa) and R. Eiyers(Silverstreara). In the detailed results, in'the events decided after "The Post" went to press on Saturday, the following ;are the nine, colleges which competed'.a'n&'the letters used to identify themi-^-Hutt (H.), Rongotai (R.), St. Patrick's College, Wellington (S.P.C.), St. Patrick's College, Silverstream (SL), Scots College (S.), Technical College.: (T:)',"Wairafapa (WK), Wellington (WN), Wellesley (WY).
