RELIEF WORKERS
WAGE CUTS OPPOSED'
DOMINION UNITY
A largely attended meeting of employed and unemployed workers was held in the Queen's Theatre last night, when speakers from all parts of the Dominion protested against the. wage cuts. The following report of the meeting is supplied:—
It was pointed out that the wage cuts were inflicted not only on employed workers, but recently on unemployed workers. Deference was made to the appalling conditions throughout New Zealand, showing that there was actual starvation in the midst of plenty. . """■
Mr.. T. Stanley (Auckland) spoke on the present economic system, and showed that a definite change would have to come about before tho conditions of the working-classes were irn^ proved. Mr. C. Fv Saunders (Christchurch) also spoke. Mr. B. O'Donnell (Dunedin) made a plea for the unity of the workers of New Zealand. They should come together in a definite move and organise throughout the country, not only for the sake of the workers,but of their wives and families. The speakers from Wellington were Messrs. C..M. Brooks, D. S. Campbel, and J. Sandford.
Mr. N. N. Hildreth, president of the Belief "Workers' Union, Wellington, presided.
At the conclusion of tho meeting, the following motion was passed:—
"That this mass meeting of workers demands the immediate release of all class war prisoners."
It was announced that at the con-' f erence of unemployed delegates at present sitting in Wellington . from all parts of New Zealand a United Front secretariat had been set. up whereby the unemployed organisations throughout the Dominion will be kept together for a move for united action, and that a demonstration had been planned for the near future. .
A motion supporting this action was carried, as follows:— .__ "That thisma.ss meeting" support and endorse the United Front ' secretariat set up by the delegates of the unemployed workers at present sitting in conference in Wellington, and that a deputation wait on the Minister of Unemployment at 9.15 to-morrow."
lit was stated that the .relief workers of Wellington .wore, at present engaged in a rent limitation campaign, paying 5s per week only toward rent, with a view to inducing others to take steps to get better conditions for relief workers throughout Now Zealand!
