MAORI CHIEFS DEATH
The death occurred in "Wellington tow morning .of - Mr. Eira W. Parata. of- Waikanae, aged 73, one of the principal chiefs of the Ngati-awa, Ngatitjoa,, and Ngati-rankawa tribes, and well known and respected by the Maori people throughout New Zealand. ... The late Mr..Parata was a keen Sportsman. "He owned and raced horses for many years,, and continued to take aninterest in racing -up till the time of his death,.though he had not participated as. an owner of recent years. Pc was formerly a steward of the .OtakrMaori Eacing Club, and had been a member ot the club for nearly fifty years. ■' . J
Sport other than racing claimed his attention, and with the rifle he wns a very keen shot. He was interested, too, in Bugby football, in which two sons, Messrs. Tom and Tama Parata, have taken a. prominent part, Tom as a referee and Tama as a representative player. He was a son of the late Mr. JWi Parata, M.P., and engaged in. farm|»g at Waikanae.
