FIFTY YEARS AGO
'We learn from the agents of Messrs. Shaw Savill and C 0.," stated "The Post" on 13th November, 1882 "that that firm has entered into combination with the Albion Shipping Company in order to form a new company with a capital of £1,000,000 in £10 shares. The present partners, it is said, will retain a large interest in the concern and act as managing directors in London. Among the other directors are Messrs. Denny and Gaibraith, the well-known shipbuilders. The new company, it is expected, will tender for the direct steam service."
With regard to the Austral, which was reported the previous week as having foundered in Sydney Harbour, a cable message of the above date announced that the bodies of five persons who were on board when- the vessel sank had been recovered. They were the bodies of the purser, the engineer, and three seamen. It was also expected to recover the bodies of several Arab firemen who were missing.
