DIVERSE AND DIVERTING
Possessing a wonderful store of curiously diversified knowledge and; a most happy iTense, of 'humour, Mr. S. Elliott Napier, who is no stranger to many readers, appears onco again in print with "The Magic Carpet, and Other Essays and Adventures" (Angus- and Robertson). This delightful vblume is so full of good things that to select any of the essays, for special mention-is difficult. All tastes are catered for, and no one will lay down the book without having gained some intellectual refreshment from it. "Verbal Phosphates," "The-Game of Chess," "The Lighter Side of the Law," "The Gentle.Art of Public Eating," "The Humours of the Catalogue,?' "On Starting and Stopping," and "Science,. Fiction, and the Eternal Mystery," are some of the titles of the 27 - essays, each one : of which is well worth reading. There is food for thought in most of what Mr. -Napier writes, but he gilds the pill very cleverly. :.Many will derive the-keen-est enjoyment -from reading these essays, the volume concluding with a very complete index, a feature rather unusual in a book of this kind. •
