GIALDINI TO BE RELEASED
(Received 19th November, 2.45 p.m!) HOME, 18th November.' : The Court of Appeal quashed the sen* tence on John Gialdini in connection' with the Clarence Hatry case/owing to' an amnesty annulling sentences not exceeding five years. ■"■""•": i ' ;
Gialdini, associate of Clarence Hatrjy and the man who was alleged to havff suggested tie fabrication of stock vcertificates by -which the Hatry frauds were carried out, was found guilty at Milan,on 12th June, 1931," on charges of being concerned in the frauds. A sum of over a'million pounds was involved in the charges on which he was convicted, the Court imposing -the following penalties:— Imprisonment for five years and ten months of the type known; as reelusion, which corresponds with, hard' labour under British law; payment of a fine of '10,000 lire -.(.tncii about £110), payment of compensation' to Sir Gilbert Garnsey (since dead), and payment of costs arising out of th« civil claim. Two items were afterwards remitted—one year's imprisonment and the fine of 10,000 lire.- Clar-, ence Hatry was sentenced to the maximum, of fourteen years by Mr. Justice Avory in 1930. ; -
