PAYMENT OF WAR DEBTS

DEMAND BY U.S.A.

NEW ZEALAND NOT AFFECTED

Although the United States will not grant a renewal of the Hoover moratorium,, and has called upon Britain to pay an instalment of £28,000,000 on 13th December, ,New Zealand will not be called upon to pay her share of the debt.

This was pointed out by the Prime Minister (the Eight Hon. G. W. Forbes) in an interview last night. Mr. Forbes recalled that he had announced in his Budget speech that Britain had agreed to suspend, for another year, all paj'ments due on the Funded "War Debt and certain other debts due to the British Government. This meant a relief to the Dominion this year of £825,000, in addition to which a saving of £47,000 would accrue to the.State Advances office.

Mr. Forbes said that this concession meant a great deal to the Dominion, for the budgetary situation would have been badly upset had the Dominion been called upon, to find this amount. Eevenue was shrinking to-day, and the relief to the Dominion was a very real one.
