BLOCKS FOR WAGEEARNERS

The suggestion that the Government should settle casual wage-earners on small blocks of land close enough to the city to enable them to receive benefit from the city labour market as well as that of the country, was made by Mr. W. A. Veitch (Government, Wanganui), when the Lands Department Estimates were under consideration in the House- of Representatives to-day. The suggestion was supported by Mr. W. J.. . Broadfoot (Government, Waitomo), who stressed the benefits to be.derived from the scheme as far as seasonal workers were concerned. ■

Mr. J. Connolly (Coalition Independent, Mid-Canterbury) said he had advocated such a scheme for years. The Minister of Lands (the Hon. E. A. Bansom) said that in. view.of the present intensive farming the Department had fostered a scheme which would give an independent living, rather than a part-timo scheme. * He would undertake to look into the matter.
