IN ARREARS
STATE ADVANCES LOANS
An attempt to obtain a statement from the Prime Minister as to the policy of. the Government in connection with arrears on State Advances mortgages was mado by Mr. B. MeKeen (Labour, Wellington South) in the House of Representatives last evening.
Mr. McKecn. said, ,it. was estimated that, tho Crown, tenants of, the Dominion were £1,000,000 in arrears, and the opinion, was :widcly expressed that the men could.not carry the burden any' further. 'Tho same applied to State Advances mortgagors, many of whom were in arrears in. both principal and interest. He asked whether the Government intended to go into the question of adjusting the valuation of State' Advances properties, or whether it was intended to,wipe out the "arrears of those who had found it impossible to pay. The position would have to be faced in-the .near future.-
In reply^ the; Prime Minister (the Eight Hon.G: W.-.Forbes) said that in Ciises '-where . mortgagors were doing their best, the Department' was doing everything >to meet the position. No policy had, been laid, down in regard to arrears,: but each- case was dealt with on "'it's merits, .and. in deserving instances everything, possible was done.
