CARTERTON MEETING
HORSES FROM TRENTHAM
Trentham stables customarily dominate their representation at Carterton meetings, and this year's meeting on Saturday provides no exception, for. twentyeight horses, or nearly half the number o£ horses listed to bo at the meeting, hail from the centre. Last year the representation was similar, and four out of the eight races were won by Trcnlliam candidates.' The centre should win . its share! of the pvents again this year. ' ' .7 ";.
The meeting starts off with tie. Novice Stakes, which, being for horses, that.havenot won a race worth £50 to the winner, belies its name in times such as the present. ' * . . ■■ ■■':■•
Among the eight possible Trentham runners those with thp most likely credentials are probably Late Jest, Maypay, and Moab Queen. Late Jest was a two-year-old last season and looked like coming good, but. he has been somewhat, .of a disappointment this season in hack elass^He ■worked well with Lyrical on Tuesday. Maypay ran a promising second at Otaki, -but was left at Masterton. Moab Queen, who. carries the same colours as Red Sun; has raced greenly in her starts to date,, but she finished fast".from the back into fourth place at Masterton. ; ■ -;'■"■ Other, horses from the centre who may go good races are Clangor and Milnrow. The former has already been a winner, but his barrier manners.»have lately been against him. If he starts here he will be coupled with Meritor, who has not raced since his early two Jyear-old day's last season. The trainer of the' pair, S. J. Reid, produced last year's' winner, Lyrical. Milnrow has shown good pace on the track, but his stablemate, Maypay, will probably be preferred to him. . HIGHWEIGHT PROSPECTS. In the Carrington Highweight, Trentham hasi three acceptors in Azure, Bright Song, and Golden.Horn. Azure '.will, probably share favouritism with Kahunoke and Kalmuck, but the distance may be' too far for him. Golden; Horn has made no showing in any start' yet, but this type of race is-likely to suit him, .and it will not surprise to find him; finishing . in ■ the money.- Nothing that Bright : Song, has ■ ever done would suggest her.' The bottom half of -the. -Wairarapa County Cup, comprising Pahu, Joie de Val, and Gay Court, is the centre's hand, and all must be allowed to possess likely chances. Pahu's experience should stand to him, but Gay Court, who will be making his debut in open company, may well be an upsetting element with his much lighter than accustomed weight. .. Seven out of thirteen is the count in the Carterton Hack Handicap. Solitaii-e II has become too unreliable at the barrier/and Trentham' hopes will rest mainly on Purse,. Aroma, and Posy.. Purse has solid- condition, and as she has suffered uo ill-effects from her Riccarton efforts, she must be .one of the hardest in the field to beat.- -Posy, who ran two. much-im-proved .races at, the Wellington Meeting recently; finishing fourth and fifth respectively in the two ..hack sixes, will be among her most serious rivals. Aroma has the pace, but does not always--do it right in races, though she won very easily..; over the distance at Otaki. . I
- There are four acceptors in £he Bunny Memorial, the open sprint, and1 two, Lyrical and Sir 3?ombal, are from Trentham. It certainly looks a gift for the top-weight, Equitant, but in such a small field both the Trentham pair may trouble her. Lyrical has recent form,': but Sir Pombal has progressed satisfactorily.since
his recovery from his. Wanganui fall, and should also ;>e. capable o£ producing; a good effort;- ~ "";• ■•■'■. . ; TOUGH OPPOSITION. In the Taratahi Hack Handicap there is considerable overlapping of the acceptances, and one at least who re unlikely to be started here is the top-weight and'last year's winner/ Joie de Val, who looks to hold a rather better chance in the Cup. Flower did not race too well at Kiccarton, but she ,was slightly sore; trouble that she appeared on Tuesday to have thrown "off. At the distance she reads on the book the best of the Trentham seven in the race. Cape Fair, on the minimum, would have had to be seriously considered a few weeks ago, but recently she has not worked at all well, though it may have been the plough that has been troubling her. The centre's horses, however, will be hard put to it in this event to beat some of the others, especially Eedtop, Emotion,, and Rene Belle./ ' . '
Pahu and Gay Court both appear again in the ilaungaraki- Handicap, and the latter especially will be tough if started here without having to caA'ry a 101b penalty, as provided for■' earlier winners by the conditions. Capetown.has done nothing especial Hn his recent work, but he races better, than he gallops. Eminent will have his recent Rieearton racing to assist his prospects^ ■"- .-. ' '.. . There is further overlapping in the day's filial event, the Electric. Hack Handicap, arid the only fresh Trentham horses engaged are White Squall arid Love Court, neither of whom has yet done anything of account. The Solitaire ,11-Maypay bracket is undoubtedly the centre's strongest hand on paper. There are several speedy horses from other centres in the event, and it is more than probable that the winner will come from them. '
The four Trentham winners at the meeting last year were Lyrical (Novice),! Retract (Carrington), St. Roger i(Carterton), and Joie de Val (Taratahi). Lyrical and Joie de Val are again engaged.. The former is. in the open sprint on Saturday and the latter is in the Cup and also in the Taratahi: .It looks on paper as if a rough, half of/the. events this year may again come th*e way of the centre. , '
