STRAWBERRIES
PROTECTION FROM BIRDS
Attention should be paid to strawberry beds at this season. All runners should be removed from the plants as isoon !as they appear, as otherwise they drain tho vitality from the plants and the /crops sufEer. Tho beds should be kept absolutely free from weeds. A layer of straw or pine needles: should be spread over tho soil and be well tucked in round the plants to prevent the flowers and fruit from becoming spoilt by contact with the earth. Provision must also be made for protecting tho fruit from birds: Frames covered wit.h wire-netting are as good as anything for this purpose. Tho frames should be made of light material, and in_ size convenient for lifting, as they will have to be moved to enable picking to be done.
