TO GROW LEEKS
METHODS OF PLANTING
December is the best time for planting leeks, but the ground sTiould be prepared in advance by deep digging and liberal manuring. The usual method of growing leeks is in shallow trenches, like celery, and earthing up to blanch the stems.. A-simpler metliod, and one which proves quite satisfactory, is to stretch, the line along the length, to
be iplanteid and to make holes about 9 inches deep with the dib'bler at dis: tances of about 12 inches. Drop in the young .plant, and. water. Do not attempt to fill in the hole;.'the water will wash sufficient soil in to cover the roots. ; " "-■■-..
./deeks are 'guite-'hardy, and can be grown' in i any. :oj.dinaT'yf. garden .soil, provided plenty of manure is available. Like all members of the onion tribe, they require plenty .of manure an,d moisture. They respond to liberal supplies of liquid manure. If the plants are fairly large at'the time of transplanting, it is sometimes advisable to~shortcn- the-tops slightly;-
The seedling plants for transplanting should be lifted with as little damage to the roots as possible. If the-weather is dry at the time it is advisable to give a good watering and lift with a fork. The illustrations show the two methods of planting. ',' ■
