PORT OF MANCHESTER
REGULAR SHIPPING
SERVICE
, Captain J.\ Wade, the Australian and New. Zealand -representative of the Port of Manchester, wrote to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce last •night condemning the practice of sending, odd ships to Manchester, because it was impossible -by{ this means to build up a steady, {trade; Manchester required stores to" be put into immediate consuinptiori,- and the -Manchester-Aus-tralian Shipments ■ Committee pressed for a minimum sailing of'"'one ship a month to Manchester for a trial period of six months. '. •'..■- '-.'•'.
■ "Our experience with New Zealand shipments shows, " . continued the writer, "that: imports are not limited to -Manchester houses,. but that when' a regular sailing can be depended, on London firms take advantage of the facility to import to Manchester supplies for the chain stores in, the north, so saving transport charges from Liverpool and London. Now that ships from New Zealand serve Manchester, the provision, merchants of Derby, Stoke, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, etc., are commencing to purchase- supplies of New Zealand provisions in our town, saving transport charges from London." ' ■ '
It was decided that the letter be forwarded to firms likely to-be concerned.
