CATHOLIC ATTITUDE
AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT
(By Telqifraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, 14th October. The follov.fing statement in regard to tho Legislative Council debate on the Religious Instruction in Schools Enabling BiH was made by Bishop Liston, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, to-:iigß 1;:— "Sir James Allen is reported to have said in tho legislative Council on "Wednesday thatt.be majority of the Catholic Hierarchy was in favour of the measure. If Sir James Allen is correctly reportacl, his statement is contrary to fact. The Archbishop of Wellington, and ;t;he Bishops of Christchurch, Duno ilin, and Auckland are in charge of 1;ho Catholic Church in New Zealand, iund they have, in public pronouncements, jointly and severally recorded icheir emphatic protest against many Bi Us produced by the supporters of the Bit>le-in-Schools movement, and if Sir .James Allen has made the statement ai .tributed to him, I trust he will noi\r correct it publicly. "The Hon. L: IT. Isitt is reported to have said that 'Cai .bolies in agreeing to the Bill had promised not to press for State grants. 7 Let it be said that Catholics will gladjVy follow the guidance .of their bisfco<ps in this matter, and that these bislio.ps have not agreed to the Bill, and ha!y<! made no promise in public or in private to anyone."
