Sti Jude's Church,; Concert. '
' Those who attended the concert organised and promoted. By Mr. E. G. Hooker and held; in St; Jude's Hall, Lyall Bay, recently, were well rewarded. "The function was well-attended, and was one of the test yet held in the hall. The proceeds, were for St. Judefs Ladies' Guild Sinlung Fiuid for Church' Debt Extinction. The stage was nicely set and a varied and interestings programme was'jgiven;-—Frank— Tozerand his Hawaiian Band were, heard, to perfection, and Mr.' Tozer himself showed' hoiv- well he was;.master of v the ukulele. A dance ''Gavotte" was prettily carried but by several pupils of Miss Cresswell Vaughan^ whose' pupils also .contributed^"Skipping" and' "Toe" dances." Becitations by_.pupils of Miss Zena";;Jupp were contributed. . Jliss ■Mbna Harriss was well received In her singing^as was also Mr. J; Blackwbod in his accordion^ sol* selections^i'Misa Seymour-, was successful in her comic recitations, and' Miss Hazel Mictin was tmce recalled - for.';-her charming < dance jsolos. t The StrollersOrchestra added much to the "success of-the evening. The vicar■:-;(the fEev." A. T. B. Page) extended thanks "to all who.had contributed," especially eulogising the organiser. It is anticipated that the funds will benefit greatly by the effort. , .-■.'■..
"The Snow Queen." Many people are keenly anticipating\the.forthcoming pantomime, ''The Snow Queen," in : which.-•will be unfolded the tale o£ the selfish... Snow „ Queen, carrying off a little boy named Kaye tocher Ice Palace; This -will bo acted and danced by sixty-five performers. The unusual froeking and scenery will give a'realistic touch to the various scenes/ such as_ "Fairyland," "On the Road to .Anywhere/^ "Toyland," and the "Palace of Ice."One will see in the ■ "Fairy , Queen's Garden" bees falling out flowers and butterflies with gorgeous1 wings. A note of humour»will be ' given by "Granny" and her ever-faithful cow "Cissie," as they journey' from town to town, their dancing and singing being good and hearty. Miss Nancy Babe is producing tbis-play, which will be held in the Blue Triangle Hall, Boulcott street,' on 'Saturday, 22nd October, at' 2.30' and 8 p^m. Correspondence: A correspondent asks if any reader of these columns "can. give her a copy of the "Hollywood Diet." It is said to extend to eighteen-days. Nelson Girls' College'Old'Girls. A social gathering \for all Nelson Girls' College f old 'girls will be held in the Lyceum Club Rooms, 115, Lambton quay, on Tuesday, 18th October, at 8 p.m. The committee is .anxious that this reunion should, be most successful, and hopes that as' many old girls as possible'will be present. Gardening: Classes.' Mrs. H. E. Fisher, y Earori, who is establishing , gardening classes for women, notifies, her terms' . and other details/by advertisement in this issue. Mrs. Fisher is already Laving- much encouragement in her plans, and those who intend to take advantage of her summer instructions should communicate with hoi1, promptly. Delightful Musicale. A number of friends had a delightful musical evening at the home of Major-General and.Madame Merlin, yesterday, when some very beautiful piano solos were played by M. Paul Vinogradoff. Madame Merlin sang charmingly, aiid. Mrs. N. S. Falla gave much' pleasure with her piano solos as well. The rooms were decorated with tulips and Iceland poppies,' and a delicious, supper was" served in the dining:rodm. Madame Merlin received her guests wearing a. smart" frock of black silk marocain, with a handsome \diamond buckle clasping the draperies, and, a short coat. Need for Guiders. "Although our companies and numbers have increased all round, we are unable to progress rapidly in. any branch because of the lack of Guiders," states the annual report of ,-tho Girl Guides Association in the "Wellington province. "We would like to suggest that our vice-presidents and associate mcinbeis take their share of helping on our work by losing no opportunity to interest in our movement young women
who might become Guiders and to encourage thorn to'coriie forward and offer us their help.7"We' want captains for our Guides and Rangers and Brown Owls for our Bro.wnie Packs. We'can offer definite training now to neV Guiders, and^it is hoped all Guiders will take advantage of Miss Duthie's help." :• "Lavender and Old Lace." ~ ' The next meeting of the Lower Hutfc branch of the League'.of-.Mothers will bo held on 20th October in. the kirie George dance hall at 2.30 p.m. The meeting will take tho<form of another "lavender and old lace" .day; the first one having been so ,very successful. The second'annual dance of the Technical- College Old Girls' Hockey Club held recently .in the PhaTmaey Halt, proved a marked success arid was thor--oughly enjoyed-by all. An exhibitioa of waltzing and two-step. ■ by" Miss Yalma Spiller and partner, a toe-dance by Miss Joyce Poppleton,, and " Miss Winifred Drew's Indian ■- club pupilrcontributed much to r th^ -eveiiiiig^'s entertainment. The -hostesses, Mesdanies Lark, Bracefield, and/-earr^ served a dainty supper. The club colours, brown and-goldj 'were prevalent in the artistically arranged flowers. Thesecretary,of the Ladies-Hockey Association, Miss B. Charles, when presenting the championship shield to tho Technical A hockey team,'.congratulated them on their unbeaten record throughout the season. This team won the seven-a-side cup and the junior A-shield. The Technical Old Girls' A team was runner-up in the senior B "grade; Miss Charles referred also to the excellent sportsmanship shown, by-the club both on and off the field, - r■ .: " :.■■"•;
