.'■;'; NEW-PLYMOUTH, This Day. . With the approach- of the Trentham and Waverley Meetings .the work on the' New Plymouth" track has livened up very .considerably.. Most of the local :contingent will race at' Waverley next Week a-ndthen-go on to Ellerslie.
.A very interesting trial bvoi- a mile took place on Thursday morning between Gibraltar and Refresher. ' 'They did not go very fast over the first' few furlongs, the first half-mile taking 54see, but then they moved along ■ to, :register lmiri ; 44- 4-ssec for the full; distance; tile -last tsvo-furlongs taking 25see\. ..■ .Refresher, Was. a head in frontat the finishi- but ,both- liorses worked^ exceptionally well, It has, not been definitely decided whether Gibraltar will go to Waverley or 'Trenthitm,'. but Eejtreshef will, contest, the'cup at the former [gathering. He ran. spven furlongs very nicely with Orapai; in imin33scc on. Thursday; and was finishing oil. ' . ■ ';., Royal Bengal was- sent .to1. Otaki' but proved a very poor traveller and was unable to start on either day. Since returning home, however, he has freshened' up considerably and moved very freely in company with Tigerism over a couple of circuits on Thursday morning. Tigerism ■is', improving- with racing, and it should not be long before he gets ■on to the winning list.
Glowlight was to have gone to Otaki but was unfortunate enough to rick herself slightly, and had to be- eased up for a few days.. She ;is now quite right again, and will i race at Waverley. Her showing on the second day at Wanganui was very encouraging, and it would seen! that patient handling suits her. As A. McLeod will have to ride Glen Vane, the services of another lightweight will have to be obtained.
'~ The two races that she had at Otaki lrorked, a 'big' improvement in' Arvada. She does~ not' do a gi-eat deal of fast work, but she should be ready to show her best on Labour Day.'
