A FAVOURABLE SPRING
PLANTING WELL AHEAD
(From Our Own Correspondent.) NELSON, 14th October. Not for many years has the Nelson district experienced such a favourable spring. The winter and early spring was dry,' allowing seasonal work on the land' to be well forward, and this has resulted in the maximum benefit being derived from the rams this month. Crop and feed growth is vigorous, and the warmer conditions now prevailing are ideal for the planting out of seasonal crops such as tomatoes and tobacco. , Already this season, a considerable area of lucerne has been cut for ensilage, the value of which is now being fully realised by the farmers throughout the district. The death occurred at Richmond this morning of Mr. J". B. Ingram, for many yeai's a well-known and highly respected resident of the Nelson district. The late Mr. Ingram, who was in his 73rd year, was born in Ellom, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He came to Richmond as mounted constable forty-six years ago. For many years he was a member of the staff .of Booth, Mac Donald, Ltd., Christchmch. and' he was a well-known figure in the Nelson, Marlbnroush, West Coast, and Golden Bay districts. He served, on the Richmond Borough Council and Nelson Harbour Board, and was one of the originators of the Nelson A. and P. Association. He is survived by a widow, son, and four daugh-
The Town Committee of -the Nelson Hospital Board reported, at its monthly meeting that the Director-General of Health had recommended Miss Bi E. Edwards as the most suitable applicant for the lease of the Motueka Cottage Hospital, and so her application had been accepted. The board appointed Dr. Margaret Snedden, of Oatnaru, to the position of house surgeon.
