AN EXEMPLARY/ FINE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, 13th October. Six men who were arrested on Wednesday in a Chinese fruit shop in Pitt street, appeared in the Police Court charged /with being found without lawful excuse in a common gaming house while a seventh, Ah Hoy, aged 35 was charged with keeping premises as' a common gaming house. ■^^"^■S- t0 Hoy ' the Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, said:—"Only last week there was a similar case and these people are simply laughing at the law. I will deal with him as I do with bookmakers."... The accused was fined £100, in default three- months' imprisonment.
"He will be handy in the laundry." l said Detective-Sergeant Kelly in reply to a remark by counsel that the acIcused could not possibly pay the fine. With the exception of one man, who' I was discharged, each of the other accused found on the premises was fined &2 and costs. .'••'• ■ .
