A request -was recently made to th» Bylaws Committee: of the City. : ; Council by certain taxi-ear proprietors -that a limited number -of taxis should, be' licensed to operate -without meters,.the main reason, advanced being \ that thera were many occasions when patrons preferred, as when entertaining- visitors and guests, that the cost of tie trip should not be held before the guests' eyes all the time. They proposedthat the taxis so licensed should be permitted to .operate from their garages or in answer to telephone calls or arrangements, and not < from., public stands. The council las approved of this private hire plan, and has drawn up a set of special conditions which, provide, among other things, for a. maximum mileage fare.within.the bylaw limit (Is 6d per car mile), the class of car to bo used, and for regular .inspection, of machines.
