FAMOUS CAFE GONE

The latest of ;the cafes of Paris to disappear is the Rotonde —not the Montparnasae establishment known so well to the representatives of every nation, but the'building in the Palais Royal gardens. It was a quiet retreat, situated within a stone's throw of one of the great streams of the city's traffic, says the London "Daily Telegraph." Its passing wi)l be a source of special regret to chess players, for it was a resort much favoured by votaries of the game, and many international competitions have taken place there. Under the Revolution and the First Empire the Cafe de la Rotonde was frequented by many distinguished artists, including David, and by savants, among whom was Lalande. The tragedian Talma was one' of its customers, and a great testimonial to the excellence of its coffee is the fact that the prince o£ gastronomos, Brillat-Savarin, gave it his approval. In accordance with a decree of the Pine Arts Ministry the cafd is being demolished, and its site is to be transformed into a flower .garden.
