' . SYDNET, llth October. 111-health is believed to have been the cause pf the suicide of a secondclass passenger, Colin . Haxtone, a native of Scotland, on the poop deck of the Maunganui during the voyage from Wellington. A silk scarf was round' his neck, and the1 other portion was attached to an awning spar. Death was due to strangulation. A bank book with nearly £500 to credit was among'l his personal effects.

Mr. Maxtone was aged 32. He was an engineer, and had resided at Lake Coleridge, Canterbury, for six years. A cabjn stewa-fd, P. Laffy, said- he believed' that Maxtono tried to commit suicide by hanging on Sunday morning in his cabin. A strap apparently broke; and while making a further attempt he was disturbed.
