LOWEST TONNAGE ON RECORD

Tho disastrous effect of the world depression on shipbuilding is strikingiy revealed by ' Lloyd.'s returns for the quarter ending 30th September, which show that 901,067 tons are under construction in the world, of which 238.433 are in the United Kingdom, the flowest \ ever recorded, and 662,634 abroad, the! lowest since 1911. Moreover, the j British figure includes 150,000 tons on | which work is suspended. Half is re- ] presented by the giant Cunarder.' Another striking feature is the tonnage of motor-ships building abroad, 385,060, which exceeds the steam tonnage by 277,574, whereas only 24,984 tons are building in the United Kingdom, compared with 212,849 tons of steamships. ■
