SEDDON MEMORIAL GUP
ORATORY COMPETITION
WELLINGTON COLLEGE BOYS
The first prepared speech contest for the Captain R. J. S. Seddon Memorial Cup, presented to Wellington College recently by Mrs. Knox Gilmer, was held at the college yesterday afternoon. There were six competitors, and the judge (Mr. M. F. Luekio)' placed J. S. Osborne first. The contest was held in the handsome college Memorial Hall, and the large assemblage if pupils and visitors' was presided over by the principal (Mr. W. A. Armour). Among the visitors were Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Dr. and Mrs. Moiiee, Mrs. Hay. and Mrs. Armour. . I .
The first speaker was W. D. Longhurst. whose subject was the Red Cross Movement. A. 11. 'Armour spoke on "Scientific Development in the Service of Humanity"; J. S.-Osborne on "Organic Evolution"; W. S. Mitchell dealt with the establishment of the League of Nations; F. 13. Wright with the development of the Salvation Army; and the last speaker, H. A. Levestam, chose The Renaissance. Sir. Luekie placed Osborne first. Levestam second, and Longhurst and Armour next. He said that Osborne's treatment of a subject of considerable difficulty was exceedingly well done. His intonation was good; he had a complete mastery of his subject; and he. had no need at any time to refer to .his notes. Mr. Luckie complimented the competitors ou the tremendous amount of investigation they had made and on the excellent manner in which they had, in nearly every case, arranged their subjects and delivered their addresses. Some of the speakers, however, had failed to gather their material together in such a way as to put a final argument—what public sneakers called the peroration. Mrs. Knox Gilmer congratulated the competitors on their work. She was heartily cheered by the boys, and cheers were also given for Mr. Luckie and.the competitors.
