BAIL DISALLOWED
CHARGE AGAINST DOCTOR
(By Telegraph.—Pres3 Association.)' AUCKLAND, 11th October. A decision not ,to allow George Frederick, Hewer, aged 39, medical practitioner, his liberty on bail pending the hearing of charges of unlawfully using an instrument' and homicide was made by Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court to-ftay. When Hewer ,was placed in the dock Mr. Singer, his counsel, said that the Magistrate announced yesterday that he would consider cthe application for bail and give his decision to-day. Mr. Hunt: I have decided to refuse bail in this case. I can use my own discretion in. the matter. '. Mr. Hubble, of the Crown Solicitor's Office, who appeared for the police, said he would strongly oppose bail being allowed Hewer. Mr. Huflt:My decision does not pre-. vent you from applying to the Supreme Court for bail. ' -. Mr. Singer: Yes, I know.' I don't know whether'your Worship has fully considered the matter of bail. I have looked into the authorities on similar cases, and.the last reported case, was as far ;back as 1848, in England—B4., years ago. ' ■ ' I
