-■.-• PALMEKSTON N., This Day.' The hearing of the charge against Norman Egbert Decke for the alleged murder of Edwin John Blakeway was resumed this morning. ■ Edith B. Vowels, who stayed at Mr. Tanner's residence: at Karere road on the night, of the tragedy, gave evidence that between 11.15 and 11.20 p.m. she heard long and short'groans like a human call, but she heard no shots. Donald Forbes said that ho saw a, bicycle at the, side of the road on the night of'23rd August at about 11 p.m. E. L. Jewell, a farmer employed at Karere, deposed that he saw the cycle oh the night of 23rd August, and ajso said he passed somebody walking along the Karere road towards the station.
P.. A. 'MtysKany,"father of .Betty Mbehan, said that the accused, when he was employed at Karere," visited his home in April last. He.had told Decke" that ha,; was not wanted, but the ' accused returhed.again. Blakeway and. withess'a daughter were engaged to, a" certain extent, but it was.hot made public. Mrs." Mcehari. gave evidence that her daughter•was-irot- engaged to Blakeway. De.ckq passed witness's home at 3 p.m: on Sunday, 23rd August, but did not speak. ...
Betty No.rah.Meehaii, aged 19, said that Blalieway /visited her h'onie rnearly every day when lie was-stationed at -Eoiigburii,' with" her parents-approval. She was friendly, with Decko and went put. with him on a. motorcycle once or, twice. Dccko wrote her fourteen lottcrs from October, 1930, to June last. Sfiq did.BOt'replyto Decke's.numerous marriage. proposals. One letter, written in.; May, contained a threat to: Blakeway which she sent to him. Subsequently Decke. visited her and asked if she was to marry Blakeway. She said "Yes." Decke replied: "I'll see that you don't." ■. ■ ..■-..:
