BOARDINGHOUSE GUTTED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
HASTINGS, This Day. A fire which broke out shortly before 3 o'clock .this morning completely gutted the upper story and almost the whole lower floor of the Excelsior Boardinghouse at Hastings, occupied by ' Mrs. Ethel Cook and owned by Mr. George Hartshorn, of Wellington. The building is situated in King street north. The guests numbered 53, eight of whom were sleeping in tents. The noise of the fire woke the proprietress, and she was able to wake the men.
All the working men lost the whole of their effects. ■ . . . •
The rooms on the upper story contained in some instances four men, and others were sleeping in the passages. It was a miracle that none were caught in the flames, which spread with tremendous rapidity.
Tho insurances included. £935 on the furniture in the Australian and Alliance Offices; those on the house are not available.
