SITUATION IN MEMEL
t GERMANY AND THE LEAGUE
GENEVA, 7th February.
Dr. Brucning, the Chancellor, has requested the Secretary-General, Sir Eric Drummond, to summon a special meeting of the League Council to deal with the situation in Memel (Lithuania), following tho arrest of Hcrr Boettehcr, German president of the Memel Landtag, by the Lithuanian Government.
The Government accuses Herr Boettoher of secretly negotiating with Berlin against Lithuania's interest.
The Germans claim that, Lithuania has broken faith with the League, which created the Landtag as security for the German citizens of Menicl.
The independence of Lithuania was proclaimed in 1918, and, under tho Treaty of Versailles, Germany renounced sovereignty over the town and territory of Momcl. A French High Commissioner and garrison governed the territory in the name of tho Allies until 1923, when Mcmel was invaded and occupied by the Lithuanians. Tho sovereignty of the territory was transferred to Lithuania in 1925. The population of, the Momel are* is 150,000, or whom 36.000 inhabit the town.
