NEW SCHOOL RESIDENCE
The new residence, for the Marist Brothers, adjacent to tho school in Hawkcstone strcot, was formally declared open yesterday by hia Grace Archbishop Kedwood, in the presence of a large gathering.
His. Grace congratulated the parish on having such an efficient band of Brothers for,the good work of Catholic education. They were wen who de-. voted their lives to the cause of education. Nothing was more : important than education, he eaid. In this school they had au atmosphere of prayer and religion. ..' :-.•:-■ .:■_•'.- t The gathering was also adaieased by the Bey. Father Smyth, who said that tho Hawkestone . Street School had boeii erected for twenty-five yoars, dur-| ing which time boys had passed through in- 'hundreds? trained and equipped * f ortho battle of life. The people of Thorndon ha.d responded wonderfully -fej the call, £1000 having been subscribed for the house. There was, however, still a deficit on the total cost. ,
, A short address was given by Mr. A. Fhilpot, who spoke oil behalf of the old boys of the school, ; The superior of the school, Brother Sigefrid, thanked all. those who had helped so generously in the building of the house.
