CASE ATTACKS MILE

CHRISTCHURCH, 7th February. The outstanding performance at the broadsiding meeting on Saturday evening was Case's attempt on the mile record. He covered the mile in .Imin 18 l-ssec, only 1 l-ssec outside Squib Burton's record, and the track is certainly- slower now than when Burton made the record. The gold helmet was retained by Blacklock against Wicks's challenge. Wicks won the first heat, as Blacklock ■ had a blow-out when he had a safe lead. Blacklock won the second heat. The thind race could; not be run owing- to Wicks having suffered an injury in another race.

Other results were:—

First Division Handicap: J. Hobson, 3sec, 1; Case (Australia), scr, 2; T. Tovnpkins, Isec, 3. Time, Imin 27 l-ssec. Kia Ora Scratch Eace: C. Blacklock, 1; W. HiU, 2; T. Tompkins, 3. Time, Imin 25sec.

MATTSON BREAKS RECORD

AUCKLAND, 7th February. Three records were established at Western Springs Speedway last night. A. Mattson,. New Zealand champion, broke;"his own. local record of nineteen seconds for one lap, the time being 18 :4-ssec. .This beats the: Dominion record' of nineteen seconds, held by Kilmister. :: Mattson won the international match race from T. Faindon, England, and V. Huxley, Australia. In the second heat of the Big Twelve Handicap Farndon established a record of Imin 22 l-ssec. Farndon's time of Imin 17 2-ssec for four laps was another, track record.
