SUMMER FLOWERS

ONSLOW SOCIETY1 S SHOW

What is considered to ha one of the best summer shows in the history of the Onslow Horticultural and Beautifying Society wae held yesterday, in the Khandallah Public Hall. There was a record number of entries, and the exhibits were of high standard. Mr. 11. B. Gibbons staged a magnificent vase of lilium speciosum, the spikes of the flowers being 4 to oin in height. The begonias displayed by Mr. R. H. Johnson, of liarori, wore very fine plants of great variety and colour. Mr. J. A. Plimmer exhibited some excellent dahlias, sweet peas, and miscellaneous flowers. A special display of ' gladioli, staged by the Rev. Mr. Peryman, of Johnsonville, was greatly admired. There were very large entries in the vegetable classes, and competition was very keen. The judge commented on the very high standard of' these exhibits, and congratulated the exhibitors. The ladies' decorative classes received good entries. In the vegetable section the points cup was won by Mr. A. Wall. The Vance Vivian cup for pansies and violas was won by Mr. F. L. Shepherd. The Normandale challenge cup for gladioli was won by Mr. W. G. Carton, whose blooms received commendation from the judge., Mrs. F. L. Shepherd won the Gibbons trophy for cut flowers, Mr. L. T. Okeby gained T. Waugh's points prize for sweet peas, and Mr. Carton also won the Rev. Mr. Peryman's tropby for the champion gladiolas bloom. The judges were Mr. J. G. MacKenzie and Mr. F, Westbury.
