DECIDING RACE
WIN FOR LYTTELTON
PORIRUA SECOND
fhe Cornwoll Cup contest ended this morning,_ tho .Lyttelton crow,. W, Tissiman and B. Uendry, scoring a decisive ■win in the ninth race and taking the cup. There was a prospect at one time of Porirua, the only other crew to start tho race- with two wins to their credit, being in at tho finish, but Lyttelton were never seriously challenged once they took tho lead and beat Porirua over the line by 2min. Christchurch were third and, Otago fourth. The Wellington crew finished last. The draw for boats resulted: Auckland, Runa; Manukau, Woe May; Plimmerton, /W.aitui; Porirua, Winsome; Wellington, Nukumai; Christchurch, Wet-U; Lyttelton, Shirley; Otago, Wairqa. Tho windward and leeward course in the moderate southerly breeze was from tho Evans Bay clubhouse to Shag Point, to Shelly Bay, to Shag Point, to Shelly Bay, and to the finishing line off the clubhouse, involving three beats and two runs. Porirua established a slight lead tcating up to tho Shag Point buoy the first time, with Otago and Lyttelton in close attendance, but the last-named crew, by smart spinnaker work, cut down Porirua's 9seo load at the mark and went to the front half-way down the run. Otago also moved up ou Porirua. The others were strung out at intervals; Wellington being last. Only f>sec separated Lytteltun (first) and Porirua at the Shelly Bay buoy, and Otago wore only a, further lOsee back third. Then camo Christchureh, half a minuto behind, Auckland, Plimmerton, Manukau, and Wellington, the last three well behind. LYTTELTON'S GOOD LEAD. Well up on the. second beat to Shag Point the Lytteltou crow were holding "a useful lead and Christchureh had weathered Porirua and gone into second place. Tissimau, tho Lyttelton skipper, was working tho boat nicely through the water, and at this stage, about half-way in the race, tho prospect of the cup going south was a bright one. Parkin, tho Porirua skip-.1 per, soon sailed through the lee of the Christchurch boat, but was unablo to make any impression on the leading boat. Lyttelton led Porirua round the Shag Point buoy by lmin llsoc, and had their spinnaker drawing in good time, while the- local crew had some trouble in getting. tho extra, sail set. Once fairly under way, however, Porirua' made a speedy run and rounded the Shelly Bay buoy only 59sec behind Lytteltou. Those two crows were now definitely tho only ones in the running, lint Lyttelton's lead was safe, and Tissiman was taking no risks. Christchurch were third round tho buoy, over lmin behind Porirua, then Otago, Auckland, Plimmcrton, and Wellington widely separated. Manukau retired without making the run. . There was no change in the order over the final stages. The oilicial finishing times from a start at 10.10 were: Lyttelton 31 a.m. 2min 28sec. Porirua 11 a.m. 4min 2Ssec. Christchurch .. 11 a.m. 4min sSsec. Otago 11 a.m. Cm in SSscc. Auckland 11 a.m. 7min oSsec. Plimmerton .. 11 a.m. Smin 2sec. Wellington ... 11 a.m. 14min losee. .. Lyttelton won twice in the Shirley, ■which was also used by^ three-.other winning crews. Tissiman has represented Lyttelton in two previous contests, at Dunedin in 1930 and at Auckland in 1931, when he filled second place three times. Ho is 18 years of age and will be just too old for next year's contest. Hendry, the forward hand, has been with Tissiman for two years, and was v member of the Lyttelton Sanders Cup crew at Dunedin last year. Tissiman credits Mr. J. Maekay, of Auckland, with having taught him. all he knows at present about the finer points of sailing Taka•puna boats. A POINTS SUMMARY. On the basis" of awarding five points for a win, three, for a second, two for a third, and one point for completing the course, Lyttelton gained 22 points after breaking their mast in two races. Auckland and Porirua tied with 17 points each, and Plimmerton secured 16 points, ■Christchurch' 14, Otago 10 (after being disqualified following a win), Wellington 7, and Manukau 5.
