The Canadian, hockey team from Winnipeg defeated the United States 2-1 to-day at the opening of the Winter Olympic Games. The United States star goalie, Frank Farrell, almost brought lii 3 team to victory, the Canadians tieing the score less than two minutes before the end and winning in extra time. Jack Shea (United States) won the 500 metres skating, and.Bernt Evensen (Norway) was second. Canadians were third, fourth, and fifth.

Irving Jaffee (United States) won the 5000 metres in a blinding snowstorm. • Against a sparkling background of snow and ice, Governor ' Franklin D. Roosevelt, of New York, opened the Games to 331 athletes from 17 nations. In alphabetical order by nations, the entrants paraded around the 400-metre ice skating surface. Jack Shea took the Olympic oath for all the athletes.
