CAPTAIN J. S. GILL RETIRES
The retirement of Captain J. S. Gill, assistant wharf-superintendent of the Union Steam Ship Company at Wellington, is announced.. Captain Gill, who is a very well known and popular figure locally, retired on. superannuation as from tho beginning of this month. Captain Gill joined the Union Company in March, 1896, when he came out to New Zealand from England on the Eakanoa as chief officer. He remained with the_ company in New Zealand, commencing as second officer. He served on the Te, Anau, Botomahana, and Eotoiti, and was appointed chief officer on the Taupo in October, 189 S. He came ashore in 1899 as assistant wharfinger at Lyttelton. In September, 1911, he was appointed wharfinger at Westport. He was granted leave for military service in July, 1915, and resumed his duties at Wostport in July, 1918. Captain Gill was transferred" to Wellington in February, 1924, to bo assistant wharf-superintendent, which position he held at the time of his retirement.
