CHRISTCHURCH ALSO

A somewhat similar statement was made to-day by .Mr. C. 3T. "Woodhead, the general manager of the station 3ZC, Christchurch. <

"I have also met the Broadcasting Board by arrangement to discuss the question of assistance for B class stations," said Mr. Woodhead, "and far from receiving any encouragement from the board, I was distinctly told.that the board could give no indication whether any assistance would be given at any future time.

"The position in our icase is aggravated by the fact that "whereas the Government decided that a morning service was essential in each of the centres and the Badio Broadcasting .Company arranged with us to continue our morning service, on which Christchurch listeners are solely dependent, the Broadcasting Board has point-blank refused to continue to give the facilities' which are necessary to enable that serviep to bo carried out. The Broadcasting; Company supplied to 3ZC such records as were required from time to' time and also gave the station, in common with other B stations, the use of •its relay lines when they-'were not required by the, local YA station. The continuance of these facilities would cost the Broadcasting Board nothing, but it refused to continue them, even if paid any amounts to which it might consider itself entitled.

"3ZO has pointed out to the board that it was appointed solely for the purpose of developing and improving the service of broadcasting, and that as far as B class stations are concerned the only action taken by the board so far will result in a deterioration of service.

"In view of the. extremely discouraging attitude of the board," said Mr. Woodhead, "notably in the case of relay lines, the loan of which would cost the board not one penny pieeo, the directors of 3ZC have been forced to the conclusion that if the board has any policy at all in regard to B class stations it is to discourage them, and hence we have no financial alternative but to consider immediately a curtailment and possibly cessation of our ser. vice." ■ '.
