VERDICT OF MURDER

AN OLD MAN'S DEATH

FEROCIOUSLY ATTACKED

BLENHEIM, 4th February.

Mr. E. J. Hill, Coroner, held to-day an adjourned inquest into the death of James Hood, 75 years of age, who lived alone in a whare in Hcton, and who was found dead with his throat cut on sth November last on the floor of his whare, with the door locked and the key missing. No weapon was found near the body. The medical evidence disclosed that on the left side of deceased's head the skull was fractured, and. the throat cut in such- a manner that only some 'muscle tissues and skin at the back of the neck were intact.

The Cororief 'said the medical evidence showed that the' injuries could not , havo ' been" self-inflicted. The wounds were of s'lich 'a ferocious nature as to leave ho 'doubi; they were tlie result of a murderous attack. Tho verdict would "be that the deceased died from extensive wounds in the throat arid a fracture of the skull, such wounds having been inflicted by some person ot persons unknown.
