SECTORS EVACUATED

JAPANESE WITHDRAWAL

(Received sth February, noon.)

WASHINGTON, 4th February. Admiral Taylor radioed the Navy Department to-day that all Japanese patrols had evacuated tho American and British defence sectors of Shanghai, "thus easing the situation greatly." It is understood that the State Department in the meantime had made new representations to Japan regarding the use of the International Settlement as a base for activity against China, but that the purpose of the representations had already been accomplished.

Admiral Taylor also radioed that the Japanese cruisers and destroyers had resumed tho bombardment of the Woosung forts.

■ Word was received from the commandant of the Philippine Islands that Admiral Kelly, commander of the British China Squadron, arrived at Manila on H.M.S. Kent, and, N after taking on board fuel and supplies, departed for Shanghai, where he is due on' Friday afternoon.
