OLYMPIC BOXERS
PURDIE AND LOWE CHOSEN
TRY-OUT FOR THOMAS
Two boxers, B. Purdie, Auckland, and Bert Lowe, Dunedin, were definitely nominated for inclusion in the New Zealand teW of athletes for the Olympic Games at Los Angeles this year, at a meeting of .the Council of the New Zealand Boxing Association this woek. Purdie and Lowe, with Harold Thomas, Wellington, were provisionally nominated last; year, and since then their performances have been watched by the council with aview to seeing that their if orni was .maintained.
Whereas the council is satisfied that Purdie arid Lowe- have maintained the form that caused them to be singled out originally, it- is" of the opinion . that Thomas has not retained'the form that carried .him through to tho : Dominion' \ightweight-championship at the- last amateur tournament, when he was awarded' the ' Jamieson Belt .for the most scientific boxer at the tournament. A.ccqrdingly, the council feels' that in fairness'to Thomas he' should be given a chance to prove himself, and he is to be matched against Val. Borcovsky, of Murchisonl The. bout will probably bo staged'before the end of this' month by the Miramar Boxing Club, under the^ auspices' of -the local association. ;
Lowe is the present .welterweight champion of the Dominion, and Purdie is the lightweight champion, but so far the boxers have hot been ;nominated for any, particular weights. In the event of Thomas not going, Purdie will probably be nominated for the featherweight and lightweight classes, and'Lowe will in any event be nominated as "a middleweight. ..- If Thomas. goes he will .probably be entered for the lightweight and welterweight classes. -■'■■■-■:
